CDR – HS

High sensitivity lightning strike counter.

The CDR-HS lightning discharge counter is a device designed to detect lightning strikes on external lightning protection systems, particularly suitable for passive systems (conductive mesh systems) and for down conductors that are in contact with metallic structures.

Mesh systems or Faraday cages are characterised by current leakages that make it difficult to detect low and medium intensity lightning strikes using standard counters according to IEC 62.561-6, as these strikes may be harmless or unrecorded. For this reason, the high sensitivity of the CDR-HS detection system is the ideal solution for this type of installation. The installation of the CDR-HS counter is recommended in the following cases:

  • Faraday cages with multiple current return paths.
  • Down conductors in contact with metallic walls, when the metallic walls are grounded.
  • When the down conductor has several anchoring points on a metallic wall and the lightning counter is placed between them.

Features and advantages:

  • High recording sensitivity.
  • Large recording capacity (999 pulses).
  • Easy visual inspection.
  • Pulse detection range:
Minimum intensity: 1 kA (8/20 µs according to 62.561-6:2011).
Maximum intensity: 100 kA (10/350 µs according to 62.561-6:2011).
  • Compact and robust design.
  • Long service life.

Certifications:

  • Designed in accordance with standard IEC 62.561-6, with an extended low current detection range down to 100 A.
  • Easy adaptation to the down conductor of any lightning protection system.
  • Allows inspection of the lightning rod status.
  • Operates under all atmospheric conditions (from -20 °C to 65 °C).
  • Does not require power supply.
  • Easy installation and operation.

Installation

Standards UNE 21.186, NFC 17-102 and IEC 62.305 specify the installation of lightning current counters on down conductors, allowing immediate inspection and verification of the protection installation status after each lightning strike: “The lightning protection system must be verified after each lightning strike recorded on the structure”.

The CDR-UNIVERSAL lightning counter has been designed in accordance with the performance requirements of standard IEC 62.561/6:2011, Lightning Protection Components (LPCR) Part 6: Requirements for lightning strike counters.

It complies with the specifications of standard IEC 62.561/1:2012, Lightning Protection Components (CPCR) Part 1: Requirements for connection components. Tests carried out at LABELEC laboratory, Laboratorio de ensayos electrotécnicos, accredited by ENAC (accreditation number: 307/LE681).
