Storm Warning System
The lightning warning system continuously measures and analyzes the development of the electric field in the atmosphere. This system enables monitoring of the electrification processes of storm clouds, generating early warnings and detecting the occurrence of lightning within a radius of up to 20 km.
System Functionality
The preventive lightning protection system PREVISTORM Storm Warning System monitors the cloud electrification process. The alarms generated by this system provide advance notice of increased risk of lightning discharge. This knowledge offers a valuable time advantage for the early activation of safety measures and the protection of people and property. This system can be used both autonomously and integrated into more complex radar systems.
As an autonomous system, the PREVISTORM Storm Warning System is used to generate visual and audible alerts indicating the start and end of periods in which there is a high risk of electroatmospheric discharges.
PREVISTORM can be integrated into automated environmental monitoring systems and data acquisition systems for scientific research.
Features and Benefits
The PREVISTORM Storm Warning System enables the integration of electric field intensity sensor data with information from lightning detection and location networks. The sensor used by this system, the PREVISTORM E-Field Sensor, uses the “electric field mill” operating principle to continuously measure atmospheric electric field intensity. The real-time processing methods and algorithms incorporated in this system make it possible to determine the moments at which the risk of atmospheric discharge increases or decreases. The operating parameters that govern alarm generation, as well as the sensor calibration depending on the installation location, are fully customizable.
Advantages
- Provides advance awareness of the risk of lightning discharge before the first strike occurs.
- Helps determine the moment when a thunderstorm has ended, based on the presence or absence of lightning strike risk.
- Contributes to the protection of lives and property by generating reliable information to support decision-making when applying preventive measures.
- Provides more accurate measurements than those offered by other storm detectors.
- Detects atmospheric discharges occurring within the detection radius.
- Features a mechanical design that ensures greater resistance to rain noise and facilitates installation.
- A sensor model is available with heaters that prevent freezing and facilitate defrosting, highly suitable for use in locations where snow accumulation makes other types of systems impractical.
- Designed in accordance with international standard IEC 62793:2020, Lightning Protection – Thunderstorm Warning Systems.
Installation and Applications
The integration and use of the PREVISTORM Storm Warning System as part of a preventive protection strategy is recommended for sites, installations, facilities, buildings, and locations where lightning strikes pose a risk to people, animals, and property.
Application Examples of PREVISTORM
Autonomous Alarm System for Mass Events
Early Warning System for Mining Operations
Integration into Environmental Monitoring Systems at Ports and Airports
PREVISTORM Storm Warning System is also ideal for use in the preventive protection of golf courses, petrochemical facilities, gas installations, renewable energy plants, amusement parks, fire protection systems, etc.
